Henry VIII said the "last several years" but I think it is the last several decades of lousy leadership, compromise, partisan, politicking and reactionary policy making that have caused our current problems. The two party system that requires adhering to the party dictums in order to climb the 'success' ladder is a lousy system of selecting and promoting candidates. Viable alternative parties would breathe health back into the system as would a true statesman with genuine forsight and the wish to provide for the right of all individuals who are US citizens to pursue their personal happiness. Fred Thompson may be a person with the attributes to accomplish this if he doesn't cave in to the Republican Party's platform on some important issues.
It seems all who have responded agree that our problem is with our political system. That in itself is a very important consideration in developing a response to the main question. Famous sociologists have written since the 50s, and this was drilled into us officers in Special Forces in the 60s, that a nation will have a revolution when a major portion of the population loses faith in the government's ability to provide those services commonly seen to be necessary: economic developement, peace and security, general happiness and law and order along with a lawful government and govenors. I think we are close to passing by that benchmark if not already past it.
OTOH, the USA still has the largest economy on Earth, the greatest military and the highest level of technology and research. These alone may help the USA to continue until the election process can morph into something that assures us of better government. I hope so!

I think our national anthem is beautiful! It really shows what people go through. But if we were to get a new one i think it should be either: Have you forgotten- Daryll Worthley (about 9/11) OR "Proud to be an American" by Lee Greenwood. "If tomorow all the things were gone, You'd worked for all your life. And you had to start again with just your children and your wife You'd thank your lucky stars, to be livin here today Cause' the flag still stands for freedom And they cant take that away! (chorus) And im proud to be an american where at least i know im free and i wont forget the men who died who gave that right to me and i gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today cause' there aint no doubt i love this land god bless the USA (a lot more words in this song that i didnt feel like typing You should listen to the song its really pretty.

God I hope not!!!
I agree, stronger leadership is needed .... I vote for Xena for president.
I have to say I'm a bit dissapointed in George W. but I certaintly don't think the alternatives would have done us any better. Saddly, not seeing much I want to vote for next time either.
Actually, being serious, I wish Arnold could run ... seems to be doing a pretty good job in CA
btw - I see a lot of comments referring to the last 6 years as low points and irreversable damage ... probably by people who have forgotten the 70's or were to young to know them ...
- double digit inflation
- double digit un-employment
- gas shortages
- gas rationing
- gas lines 2 blocks long
- US as a lowly, long lost former great power
- America Held Hostage day 440 + (my God, that's over a year of doing nothing!)
- The laughable failed rescue attempt
- The world laughing at our miserably ill-prepaired military
- A real cold war (complete with fears we are losing to the USSR)
- The USSR
- Japan stealing our economy (ok, so now it's China .. we do have choices of where to buy from btw ... by USA while you still can)
....
(It's a very long list)
The point is things are less than rosey now but way ahead of the late 70's. The only mistake with Iraq was thinking we could fix the problems in the long run. One main reason Geaorge Sr didn't drive all the way through in the first war was the fear that what would follow Saddam was even worse than him. As evil as he was, he did keep things in control (sad to make that statement but it's true).
Ok, settles it, I'm writing in Xena (we just have to annex New Zealand first).

I'm conservative and I may be a pessimist, but yes, I believe that our great nation is dying a very slow death. I don't think that our leaders care about us anymore, they (both sides) only care about the vote and about filling their pockets. An example is the immigration issue. If only our leaders would ENFORCE the laws we already have, there would be no problem. But for some reason, both sides of the aisle have a problem with that and want to create another bill about it. It makes no sense. Yes, Strong leaders are needed, ones who love the US more than they love themselves. I'm not sure right now who those people could be.

All the gloom and doom we hear these days is because the nation is in a funk over the way our government has been handled over the last several years. We have an opportunity to make positive changes. Vote progressive and we will move along. At some point we will look back at this as we do the Civil War, the World Wars and the Great Depression as a low point in history. We also have high points. We are nearing the cusp of such a high point. If we vote progressive we will reach the high point if we do not we will remain on the cusp or retreat back to where we are now or worse. The decision is up to the American voting public.
TR was a progressive, and you are right he would be useful now.

I think we are slowly sliding towards theocracy. Both parties can't seem to do enough to show their phony religious piety. There is no leadership from either party because they are both too wrapped up in hyperbole and political polls. The best thing we could do to boost leadership would be to ban political polls and reassert the separation of church and state.

Yes, mostly because our out-dated electoral system only allows Bozos into the arena, thus assuring that at least one of them will win. Intelligent, thoughtful, conscientious people can't get past the fund-raising stage so that they can afford to run. Rich people are mostly "bean-counters" so they are incapable of seeing the "bigger picture" the rest of us have to live in every day.

One of the best chances is with Fred Dalton Thompson. He's Conservative! But he's a no-nonsense type o' guy. He can get things done! He's got enough followers from the Conservatives. That he can make a difference.
