I have a 2000 Mitsubishi Galant with 140k miles. Then engine light is on and when I took it to get checked out they told me it was the cat. converter. I took it to get replaced and the mechanic told me there was nothing wrong with it. The car has been getting lousy gas mileage and it burns oil off quickly, always requiring an oil change sooner then scheduled. The whole car shakes when stopped which leads me to think its the mounts, but considering all the other problems it points me to something being wrong with engine. I recently changed plugs and wires and was advised that they are firing correctly. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

Engine misfire of some sorts.
Double check the spark plug wires by gently pulling on them to see if one is loose.
Or maybe two of them are swapped out on the wrong spark plugs.

Maybe have a cylinder compression check done on the engine.

The whole car shakes may be because the rotors are warped. This happens on alot of cars these days. Many cars have a sensor around the Cat converter and it is likely the sensor is bad. Cars get worse milage when the check engine light is on. As for the oil problem I would have to have more information. It could be a number of things..In all that is a bad make, bad model and bad year..Fix what someone would notice on a test drive and sell it quick. Sorry!

Burning too much oil can plug up a cat converter and fuel economy will suffer, shaking could come from engine running poorly---sounds like you have two problems---burning oil and partially plugged converter---have the plugs checked for oil fouling and have a compression test done to see if it's bad rings or valves or both. Get estimate on repairs to fix oil problem and converter replacement---might not be worth spending the money on the car.
