When I read "Wasteland" by Francesca Lia Block, it made me cry. It's about a teenage girl whose older brother commits suicide. Her search for answers as to why the suicide happened is very touching. It's a rather short book but it's very compelling.

Good luck and happy, er I mean sad, reading. :-(

The saddest book I ever read was When Rabbit Howls by Truddi Chase. It is usually in the psychology section of book stores and tells the true story of Truddi Chase's life of abuse and subsequent multiple personality disorder. A close second and third would be A Child Called It by Dave Pelzer and Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. Get your box of Kleenex ready.
Hope this helps,
Channa

Our Mutual Friend, A Tale of Two Cities, or The Old Curiosity Shop by Charles Dickens. All of these end in a "satisfying" manner, and you could say that OMF and TOCS end happily, though there are still sad aspects. If you're looking for something that is all sad, though, ATOTC is probably the best choice, because the other two have quite a bit of humor in them as well.

Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas by James Patterson.

The story will make you happy, mad, and every other emotion inbetween and if the ending doesn't make you cry you are heartless!! My copy of the book has went through everyone I know and all loved it so much that they read it in one day...just couldn't put it down. I have read it at least 4 times!!!! Hope you enjoy!@!

"Green Mansions" by W.H. Hudson. I picked it up late one night and started two read. Two things happened...

a) I got no sleep that night
b) The book was so sad that I wanted to cry

Being the manly man that I am, though, I picked up Sports Illustrated immediately after I finished the book and read a blow by blow of the latest Mike Tyson fight...it was less than a paragraph.

The Dogs of Babel, Carolyn Parkhurst

This is one of the most intensely sad books I've ever read. It haunted me for days.

The author of Flowers for Algernon is Daniel Keyes. I am partial to Good-bye, Mr. Chips by James Hilton. Not only did I cry when ever I read it, I cried when I read it to my kids... then my husband took over reading (when I was crying too hard), and HE started crying!

Most of Nicholas Spark's books are tearjerkers... =)

Try Danielle Steel's "Kaleidoscope" and "No Greater Love".

Read it when I was like 11 years old and I was up the whole night crying.
