This is clearly my first pregnancy b/c I don't know anything about labor and delivery, my sister had a catheter when she birthed her son due to a c-section, however my mother didn't but she went all natural, so is it that times have changed or what?

When I had my sons I had an epidural and with my first they used it to drain my bladder before the baby came out...just stuck it in and took it right back out as I couldnt get up to pee first...and with my second I had the baby then they drained my bladder, same procedure as the first...that was it...if I had gone all natural they wouldnt have used it, but since I couldnt get up to pee my OB used one just to drain the bladder for me.
With a C-section it is necessary to leave a catherter in place to keep the bladder drained and for other medical reasons....it usually stays in place for up to 24 hours after the c-section, but I have heard women say they take it out right away..really it depends on your hospital that you choose to deliver at and your OB

It depends. If you have an epidural, you will most likely have a catheter. If you do not, you will be able to get up and use the bathroom. I had 3 natural deliveries and did not have a cath with any of them. If you cannot use the bathroom after a certain period of time after giving birth, you may require a catheter then.

I did not have a catheter after the birth of my daughter. I don't know about when you have a c-section because I did the vaginal birth but as far as my delivery was concerned, the nurses monitored my urine for a few hours after I gave birth. Most likely they will do the same for you. If they find that you are not urinating enough, they may opt to give you one. Believe me, I wish they had given me a catheter....it was hell trying to get up and walk to the bathroom every 5 minutes(no exaggeration) to go! Good luck!

I had both of my babies natural within the past 4 years, and did not have a catheter. I had an epidural with both deliveries and still no catheter. Might just be for c-sections.

Normally, you don't need a catheter for a natural delivery - all
c/s need one for the surgery, so the bladder isn't in the way when they make the incision for the surgery. They leave it in after the section so you don't have to get up and pee, and you have an epidural for pain anyway.
Occasionally, labor patients need to be cathed because the bladder won't empty and a full one will hold up progress in labor.
Sometimes, after moms deliver, they need a cath for various reasons.

Usually during a c-section there will be a catheter inserted, but normally not during a vaginal delivery. I delivered all 3 of mine vaginally and did not have one. I also had epidurals with my 1st 2 and NO catheter. Good luck!

A catheter is generally only used when having to go in for a c-section. I have heard on odd few occasions that natural birthing that women have gotten them. But most normal births dont have catheters, nor do they do enemas anymore. Hope this helped!

If you have an epidural it will numb you from the waist down and you cannot get up to go to the bathroom so they will use one. Also, if you get a spinal block for a c-section you will have a catheter for the same reason.

It is actually all up to you during a normal delivery. I had mine natural and was given the option of a catheter and said no.

I had a catheter because they broke my water and I couldn't tell when I had to go. I think it all depends on the nurse and your Dr. and probably the health of the baby as well.
Congrats and Good Luck!
(I highly recommend an epidural)
