Is there a small laptop that is small and costs less than $80. I am writing a book and I find it eaiser to write on the computer than in a book. I want to write in other places than the computer room. Is there a laptop especially for Microsoft Word? Or has Microsoft Word made a special laptop just for it that doesn't cost that much? Thank you for answering.

The project to create under-$100 laptops got a lot of news coverage a couple of years ago. They have low-resolution screens and a hand-crank to generate power. I think it was called the OLPC project (One laptop per child).

They do exist, but they aren't sold in any industrialized nations, they are only being distributed in in 3rd-world countries- remote villages in Afghanistan, Africa, China etc.

For the rest of us not living in areas without running water or roads, check Ebay- you may be able to find a used 8-10 year old laptop in that price range. Old hardware like that is fine for running Linux and Openoffice.

You might even find one with Windows 95/98 and install Word 97. The only issues would be:

1) how to get your finished book off the laptop, since those old clunkers don't have CD burners, and who knows if the floppy drive still works. Most modern-day USB storage devices don't have drivers for anything earlier than Windows 2000.

2) It would be incredibly risky connecting to the Internet with such an old, unpatched operating system.

Good luck for under $80. The best think you can do is try to find an old used lap top and if it doesn't have a word processor on it when you get it, try OpenOffice.org
