Addiction are just that; Addictions.
There's not always a lot of control regarding whatever your particular addiction is. However, I also think there is a world of difference between a true addiction and just some behavior that you enjoy and really, REALLY don't want to give up.
To be an addiction, you must not be able to give it up on your own. I also think everyone has at least one addiction or more. We all have different ones, but no one is perfect or exempt from an addiction of some kind. Might be physical or it could also be mental, or a mix of both, but we've all got something, and no; there is not always a choice. Addictions are compulsive and very strong.
This is not to say that they can not be overcome with true diligence and discipline. You've got to want to do it yourself. You can't overcome an addiction just because someone else thinks it would be a good idea. Addictions run deeper than that.

That once you give in, there's no turning back. Or at least, no turning back without a fight, intervention, or some other drastic measure.

Childrens of smoker tend to smoke.
Alcoholism tends to run in families.
