it could cost a lot, but what is a lot to you? my brother paid his lawyer an initial $5000- $8000 plus other fees, and now to make corrections on the lawyers mistakes. he has to pay an additional $1700 lawyer's fee to re-submit the correction on rejected paragraphs, plus filing fees. that is, just to make simple correction of which the patent lawyer supposedly had done. if you are good in writing, do it yourself. it will cost you just the filing fees and time. also, you might need a diagram of your invention. my brother had to pay for his drawings that was also rejected. if you can't draw get a cheap software on CAD. i bought DesignCAD 3D Max 17 for $69 at Fry's Electronics for this purpose, and it works great. if i were you i'd call the patent office. contact EBC at 866-217-9197 or see PAIR system at http://pair-direct.uspto.gov, and at the same time, if you decide you only want to spend a measly $500 for a chance to have your own business plus rebates on your phone calls and services, go to acnway.com; you'll be glad you did. by the way, my brother filed his invention in 2005, and it is still patent pending. he is still tweaking his invention for an approval. he went to acnway.com to supplement his invention; and i strongly suggest create your invention first, then test it, re-test it, until you are completely statisfied of it before you submit. make sure you document everything. email your documents to yourself, and do not open it. it is your proof, just in case someone else tries to steal your idea. do not wait for any approval. just create your dream invention one step at a time, and sell it or offer it to the public. make it a reality. so you don't know where to start. go to google.com/patents, you might be surprise that your idea is not unique after all, then call my brother at his voice mail at 702-939-6434 for more info; his name is noel. how do i know this stuff? i had to pick up the pieces together for him.

Are you certain that your 'invention' is not already covered by a registered patent? There are thousands of registered patents which have never seen the market place, with the inventors merely registering their patents.
In order to make this determination, you will have to have a patent search performed. Depending on the nature of your product, it could be expensive, or not be expensive.
Avoid the online 'patent search' offers. You generally need to submit your design to them and sometimes theft of innovation occurs.

I have had several ideas over the years. I finally called one of those patten companies and they want to charge you a fortune just to get started. If you have the extra money to spend on that them I sday go for it but be ready to pay about $2000.
