It's a reaction of aluminum with another metal (like iron) that releases great quantities of heat and flame. To do one yourself, you can mix dehydrated rust (iron oxide) with aluminum powder and sugar as a catalyst. Add a drop of sulfuric acid and then get the heck away...you'll see a bright flame resembling fireworks, and a small lump of molten iron will be left behind, that you can grab after it cools.
