Do you have to boil up (as it were) the cinnabar to produce the Mercury?
Don't worry I'm not going to try it!

Mercury is mined as cinnabar ore then the metallic form is refined by heating the ore to above 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

So my son tells me. I also found you a site:

Mercury is obtained from cinnabar, corderoite, livingstonite
Cinnabar is the most common Hg S

Mercury is naturally a liquid at room temperature, this is because the bonds within the atoms are relatively weak.

Please don't be tempted to play with mercury, as contact with the skin can cause poisoning. Mercury used to be used to clean the brims of hats - it's what made the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland mad.

Mercury is a naturally occurring element, Hg. It is found in nature in compounds like HgS, Mercury sulfide, most commonly called cinnabar.

Generally compounds are submitted to some form of electrolysis to separate the elements.

Mainly comes in ores that are not very pure such as cinnabar which is why its expensive. Not manufactured as it is a naturally occuring element, but processed.
