It's not dumb, your a proud parent. I don't believe in over doing it, and it's sometimes difficult trying to celibrate just one time with all family being spread out. We always had a birthday with out of state relatives for our kids, fairly close to their actual birthday. Then, on their actual birthday, we would have a small party with cake and ice cream and several smaller gifts. If this is "spoiling" a kid, I'll tell you this, My kids are all grown now, none have been into drugs or broken the law. I'm a proud dad of 3 and yes, I spoiled them this way every birthday. Draw your own conclusions, and good luck.

We have the same thing happen with my daughter last year and with her 2nd birthday coming up in a few months. You can always have a second small birthday party with just you guys. Let him color or scribble on some paper or in a coloring book then hang those as decorations. Make a cake and a nice family dinner. It would be memories that you could share as a family later when he can understand. Plus it will make you as a parent feel better instead of "doing nothing" for his "actual birthday." Bottom line: get creative and think of a special tradition that you guys can do each year because it will happen like this next year and for many more to come trust me. That guilty feeling won't go away next year. :)

We always have the big family party and then on the actual birthday they have a few presents..nothing to big. We have a cake or cupcakes or go out to dinner, something to make their day special. Happy Birthday to you sweet baby!

I would take him to the store and let him get a small toy. Just something to make him feel special. And maybe give him a cupcake with diner tonight. That is what I did with my children when they were small. Happy Birthday to the little guy.

Start a new tradition ON his special day. You could take him out for a special play day every year. It will become YOUR special day as his parents to celebrate his arrival into your life! When my youngest daughter was school age (5), we started our own tradition that I would pull her out for lunch on her birthDAY and we would go to the local ladies' coffee shop to have a salad and sandwich and she would order a special cream soda drink that was topped with whipped cream and sprinkles for the birthday girl. She just graduated high school last week and we did it clear through her Sr. year of birthdays! Who knows? She may still want to come home from college that day and do it still yet! Afterall, it is our TRADITION that she has lunch with mom that day at the coffee shop!!!
I have 2 other kids and my son likes Mom to make his favorite supper and cake for his birthday. My older daughter likes me to take her shopping and out to eat for her birthday.

You can do something small like go out to eat or go to his favourite park. Nothing too big though. The first birthday is more for the parents, the baby has fun but most likely won't remember.

We only have 1 party for our son, so its not very often that its on his actually birthday. So on his actually birthday, we go out for kid friendly pizza (think Chuck E. Cheese). They usually make a big deal out of birthdays even if you aren't having the actual "party" there...
