I'm thinking about moving to the United Arab Emirates after college, but I wonder if this is a good idea. It has a lot of economic potential, and I'm sure I could get a good job there.

However, is there anything I should know about UAE? For example, Human Rights (homosexuality, torture prisoners, etc), It doesn't appear to be as violent as some places like Iraq or controversial like Iran, so it seems pretty good.

Would moving there be a good idea?

Many of my friends have gone to UAE for vacation.
There are some mighty wealthy people investing in that region and the opportunities are ripe for the taking.
YES you should go there and checkout the action.....our troops go there for their leave because they are able to party hearty.

I kind of can confirm what Soso said above. It can be a pretty tough and rough place in terms of exploitation, and most of the business and the professional relationships are based on WASTA, which is Arabic for 'connections'. It is slightly like in Saudi Arabia where you can do anything you like, as long as you have good wasta.

However, life here can be pretty fun if you are open-minded and ready for a good challenge. But the facade of glitter and glamour will disappear fairly quickly. If you really want to move forward and succeed, you need to work hard, have the right job, and establish some wasta through Emiratis (who as a rule are not easily accessible). If you are looking for a first job after college I doubt if finding one will be easy. Employers are keen on references, certificates and previous work experience. Reference checks are numerous.

If you know how things work here, you will have a good life and no trouble. But you need to be open-minded and accept things you would not be willing to in your home country.

Mind that there are significant differences between the different emirates. As others mentioned before, life in Dubai is very expensive because of the rents and traffic is worse than a nightmare. Abu Dhabi is an a lot more mature city and it still is affordable. Sharjah is extremely conservative (no alcohol allowed at all, women not allowed to wear shorts etc.) but the rent is cheaper and wages are much lower than in neighbouring Dubai. Ajman, UAQ and RAK are small, nice and affordable but do not offer the same quality of life, international environment and well-paid work. What's more, RAK and Fujairah are quite remote places.

It certainly is a good idea to leave your native country after school, college or university and live a new experience in a different culture and environment. But I would not recommend UAE as a very first step out of your ordinary world. At a later stage - anytime!

You need to see if your particular degree is one that is paid nicely for in the UAE. Some fields of work are paid very poorly. If you are coming from the West you will get better wages than if you are coming from a 3rd world country. For human rights information: www.hrw.org. The UAE is on their list for human rights abuses. Other than that the UAE is not a violent or crime ridden place. Of places in the Middle East it is one of the best. Rent is prohibitively expensive and I would not advise anyone to come here without housing provided by their employer. Traffic in Dubai is horrible. Expect to take 1 to 2 hours everyday for your commute to work.

All that glitters isnt gold.the place is expanding showing itself off to the world.

But be sure that if you do go there , your going get a huge package and that your rigths arent taken away from you.

What i would advise you ,to save enough money there and get out when u have enough of the place.

My dad was a doctor for many years there, all of a sudden they took away all his rigths becoz the emiraties thougth he didnt deserve it.Plus there a loads of descrimination between an expariate and a emiriati .Its a jungle law trust me.

look before your leap.

Wish you best of luck on your decision.

Sorry, no advice, just want to wish you luck. It is hard, but I hope you succeed. You seem like you'll work hard, and I guess that's half of what you need to succeed. The other half is god, and Allah rewards hard work and dedication.
