Used to own similar type of machine. Not top of the range but works well. Graphics card is fairly standard so dont expect miracles. Never got more than an hour and a half from fully charged battery but you can squeeze more out of it by disabling some features you don't use often. Other than that it's not a bad buy for the price your paying.

Check out Apple.
As a student you will qualify for educational discount.
Go into an Apple store if you can, or check on-line if you can't. The range is excellent, and the operating system is reliable and user friendly; the hardware is extremely well designed and reliable. Nothing is perfect - I've always found the service to be excellent. customers of other companies rarely say the same. Talk to Apple users, the experience speaks for itself.
Finally, in the Guardian recently:

...look for the "While in New York..." sub-heading about half-way down.

Thats fine but skip the Vista that is full of bugs ... This months Maximum PC (June) is still advising readers not to move to Vista for at least another 12 months and anyhow why move to vista when you can do all this with the same computer.
buy the computer and without any operating system and load it with Ubuntu Linux for free with all the software you will ever need
check out what you can really do with a normal Laptop/PC click on the weblink below

I have an Advent PC - and it is quite robust and does all I want and more - very similar specs - but I only paid £419 - look around - the PC will do all you want it to do - don't bother with the £7.99 product support - it's a con that only earns them money - it comes with 12 month warranty

It's certainly capable of doing what you intend to use it for - It has Vista Premium so includes media center but I notice this model has no tv out or firewire

Don't go for an advent, try acer or gateway. apple are over rated and too expensive for what they do. you may want to get one with a bigger memory a 2GB RAM and an 160GB hard drive. trust me and look at the gateway on the tesco website- its a cracker or try the £549 acer in comet or look at it on their website. im getting one soon for my birthday plus they have a built in webcam and big memory. your 80GB hard drive will fill up in no time with music, photographs and letters etc.
trust me and go for an acer or gateway.
good luck.
