I had to have a new 40 gallon hot water heater installed and i just noticed that the pipe for cold water on top was still leaking just
a small drip when i run cold water any ideas on how to fix this

If it is only dripping when the water is running, it is more likely condensation--- your pipes are under pressure all the time, so it should leak all the time. Wipe it all off with a paper towel, don't run the cold water and see if you can tell where the drip is-- if out around the threads, it is a leak. But it might just be drops rolling down the pipe a ways. If it is a leak, get the installer back to fix it right. If condensation, put a insulation foam cover over it.

If it's a leak, the installer should do the repair gratis.
It's his mistake.
Since it's on the cold water line, check that you're not looking at condensation. If this is the case, insulate the pipe.

not knowing if the piping is soldered together or if its threaded pipe I cant say to tighten it...but if it was just installed get the guy who did the work back there and make him fix it.
