So Van Halen's eruption song is considered one of the best guitar solos of all time. But, everytime I listen to it, I find that it doesn't really sound good at all. It actually pains me to listen to it.
Is it because of the technique that makes his song good?

You have to keep in mind that Van Halen 1 was released in 1978. At the time, it was a great rock album (and still is, IMO). Eddie Van Halen's guitar technique, at the time, had never been heard. "Eruption" is a great guitar solo. Now, fast forward all of these years and think of all the guitar players that have came after Eddie, and really are better guitar players. Many guitarist have solo pieces on record. But, noone sounds like him and he was a huge influence on most Rock guitar players that have come along in the last 25 years. Music is a matter of taste. I still Love that album and "Eruption", but I have heard many people say that VH 1 hasn't held it's own over the years, but I disagree.

I don't know who told you it was the best guitar solo ever, but I know I got tired of playing it twenty years ago when I picked up the bass. If you want to hear some real smoking guitar work, check out Vinnie Vincent, former lead guitarist for KISS. The song "Animal" is just ridiculously fast lead guitar work. As for Van Halen, yea, he was good- but I've heard lots better in garage bands.

Eruption is almost 30 years old. It was truly ground-breaking in it's day. Yes, it's the technique that makes it so great.

There's a lot of great instrumental guitar work out there:
Joe Satriani
Steve Vai
Vinnie Moore
Jeff Beck
Greg Howe
Richie Kotzen
Gary Hoey
to name a few . . .

I don't think there's any Van Halen song that contains "The best" guitar solo of all time. Hot for teacher is pretty damn good. Eddie was just fast on the guitar...but all guitar players know fast doesn't equal good...

Naw man Eruption was just like the world getting introduced to the man. Just a taste of what the man could do. IIt's not supposed to be a magnificent composition, just flexin his skills some. I like the solo Randy Rhodes does on th Tribute album.

Personally I think it's terrible. And I like Van Halen--but Eruption is just a godawful noise with no point at all.

Jump I joke though i find it quite funny a guy heralded as a guitar god's most famous song features a keyboard riff but back to the question, probably ain't talking bout love, that riff is freaking awesome and the solo is also cool as hell.

It was cutting edge, revolutionary in it's day.

Like all great pioneers their first works will always be labled as 'the best' as the mantra gets passed from one generation to another.

It's all a matter of perspective.

yes...eddie, i consider was the pioneer of that pyrotechnic style....with the tapping style...others were doing it, but he brought it to the table with eruption.

I don't like it. I didn't really like "Intruder" (intro to "Oh! Pretty Woman") either. I guess they were just trying to add too much to their cover songs.
