You do not need to do anything-- you own the copyright as soon as you put the words down on paper. If you are intending to publish it, the publisher will take care of filing the official paperwork and paying the fee. It can be a hassle to them if you go ahead and copyright it on your own, because you will be doing rewrites based on their notes.

You patent inventions, you copywrite books.
Go to a government bookstore and buy the copywrite/patent publication that gives you step by step instructions, about $50.

That's copyright, as in legal rights... not copywrite...
