I think liquid. If powder is what you choose...make sure to start machine....then add powder prior to clothes. This way the powder will dissolve completely in the water and you will not have residue on your clothes after. I do the same with the liquid...but too many problems with the powder in my opinion....once you drop the box of powder several times...you tend to stay away from it. Happy washing

It matters little if it is powder or liquid. What matters is what's in the soap/detergent. You can pack a lot of wallop in a powder or you can have a powder that is all "filler" (non active ingredients). The same with liquids. Which ever you chose, you should always run the water for the cycle and then introduce the detergent. Allow the detergent to mix a bit before throwing in cloths.

You didn't ask, but the most effective detergents seem to be those that contain enzymes designed for digesting common, organic soils (grass stains, blood, food) that would get on clothes.

I think liquid and powered laundry detergents are equally effective. Its my belief that powered detergent cost lost to produce, and liquid cost more. Therefore, with powered detergent u get more 4 less. The appeal in Liquid detergent is that its less messy but u get more powered (loads of laundry) for the same price.

Think of it like this:
What`s more effective bar or body soap.(Get it?)

The age old question. Here goes. Powdered is stronger and will get grime out better BUT is harsh on delicate fabrics. Liquid is gentle and won't harm fabric BUT doesn't clean as well. You have to decide what works for you. I have a kid that works fast food. I use powdered laundry soap for the cleaning power and just back it off a bit on the delicate cycle. You could use both, one for delicates, one for "work" or "play" clothes. If you use poweder, make sure you start the load and put the soap in the bottom. Then, stir it to make sure it dissolves completely. (I use an old broom handle for this job.) (I'm a mom of 5 and former dry clean operations manager.)
