If you have a video capture device for your laptop, you can do it by simply playing back the shows on the DVR.

For actual Tivo recorders, there are 3rd-party card & software available which allow the Tivo to be accessed over a network to update recording choices, transfer files etc. I don't think any of the cable-company branded DVRs (like Time Warner boxes) support this.

I've read on several websites that people have tried and failed to get movies moved from the DVR to a laptop.. There is some sort of copy protection or encoding on the files that make them unreadable on a computer.
