I'm just trying to figure out how this can benefit them. Any ideas?

Two reasons:

1. They're hoping you use it to wash down a burger or chili dog

2. New customers might discover the place and come back as paying customers.

The 'free' float only costs them 7.4 cents in materials

I have to agree with the other answers which is to get butts in the door or at least in the parking lot.
However it could be because you are soooo pretty.

promotion...getting people thru the door is the toughest thing for any retail business...

if you can get people to come in, chances are good you can sell them SOMETHING...folks who aren't in the store are guaranteed to buy NOTHING at all.

so, they have a nice little product that costs them very little, and they promote it knowing that the return business these freebies are gonna generate FAR outweighs whatever up-front costs they incur.

don't you have economics 101 in your school? every third-grader should know this schtuff...not your fault, it just shows how dismal the schools are getting.

kuz they want ppp to come eat there and think oh this is good ill come here again. thefore robins gaining poppulartiy pointz.. want some fries wit the shake iz wut theyll be thinking hoping you buy like a main food course with the lil FREE drink
