Shakespeare
SONNET 154
The little Love-god lying once asleep
Laid by his side his heart-inflaming brand,
Whilst many nymphs that vow'd chaste life to keep
Came tripping by; but in her maiden hand
The fairest votary took up that fire
Which many legions of true hearts had warm'd;
And so the general of hot desire
Was sleeping by a virgin hand disarm'd.
This brand she quenched in a cool well by,
Which from Love's fire took heat perpetual,
Growing a bath and healthful remedy
For men diseased; but I, my mistress' thrall,
Came there for cure, and this by that I prove,
Love's fire heats water, water cools not love.

Love is both like fire and like water, because love, like everything in life, has aspects of duality. Love can be experienced like a fire because a person in love can feel the burning internally from deep desire or deep anger during a fight. Love must also be like water because water finds a way through even the smallest cracks- compromising its wholeness and integrity in order to survive either as a larger body or water or as tiny drops. Similarly, in love compromise is necessary in order to 2 individuals to be successful in love. In order to be successful in love, people must compromise like the water does, either by accepting the other person, or making changes within themself. Love is both like fire and water because it has good times and bad times, hardship and happiness, tears and joy-----fire and water.

Love is a passion. It is the giving of yourself.
infatuation is an emotion and is like being drugged.
It feels good, but it is still about yourself. It can feel like fire or water and is OK either way.
What comes out of you is the more important part though.

Love is like popcorn, using fire to make the water in the kernel turn corn into something delightful.
Not the fluffy kind of delightful, the couple watching TV together (or playing Scrabble together) kind of delightful... he reaches for her hand... it's always there.
That's love.

Love is like fire.
It's wild and uncontrollable
It can spread and can be unstoppable
It's a disaster that can swallow you whole
It's a flame that keeps you burning
