Depends on your style he did well into the 80's

Some songs that you may want to consider that were on the charts:

"Space Oddity"1968-(69?) A Narrative that is about "Major Tom" going through space "often interpreted to be about self-destruction and estrangement from humanity"

"Starman" (1972) when David went through the "glam-rock" phase.

"Fame" and "Young Americans" (1975) U.S. popularity defdined as "plastic soul" lost U.K popularity at same time

"Hereos" (1977)

"Ashes to Ashes" (1980)

"Under Pressure" (1981) performed with Queen

"China Girl" and "Let's Dance" (1983)

"Dancing in the Street (1985) with Mick Jagger (If you like men shaking butts and being silly, see the video) [*by the way, he chose to do this instead of "One Love" with Bob Marley! Go figure!*]

I'm sure there are others, but this is what the public liked and showed it in sales....

Best Album's?
Ziggy Stardust...
Let's Dance
But if I wanted to hear the spectrum of his career of successes, go with the resent best of album

Hunky Dory is my personal favorite. Every song on that one is brilliant, Life On Mars? is my favorite on that one for the moment. For someone new to Bowie I suggest his greatest hits, Best of Bowie, but spend the extra cash for the double, it's worth it to have The Man Who Sold The World, the only problem I have with that CD is that Young Americans is the single version, not the album version which is edited.

Best of Bowie is the one to get. It shows the range of his art and spans to the 90's I believe. There is something for everyone in that CD. But handsdown, for me my fav song has to be Space Oddity. It's chilling.

My favorite is Station to Station and the song Wild is the Wind: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Station_to_Station

That album should give you a good intro into Bowie - then try listening to Black Tie White Noise.

if you get his greatest hits double cd that ranges from the early seventies until the nineties it doesnt cover his very early days before he became david bowie or his most recent stuff with tin machine but gives you a taste of most of his changes over 3 decades if you get to like a perticular period you can expand your collection with other cds from that period

Everyone else will probably answer with music, so I won't. See him in the movie 'Basquiat' to get another perspective on his talent.
