If you are talking about a floating ring to help the bubble nest stay together you will only need that if your filter is causing lots of surface motion. In a breeding tank it shouldn't really cause that much movement.

If it is though, yes any floating piece of plastic will get the job done, assuming the male picks that place to build his nest of course.

People have used a cup (styro because they were cheap and float) because many people don't put plants in the breeding tank (I assume in hopes they can keep the tank cleaner longer after the babies are born). The cup gives the fish something at the water surface to build his nest under and the halfed cup also offers protection from any errant draft that might pop the bubbles. A cup isn't necessary though. I usually use floating surface plants like water sprites since the fish are used to having plants in their tanks, the plants will suck up some of the nitrites, and plants aid in "making" infusoria which newborn babies eat.

You really don't need either one. Some people use the foam cups cut in half to give the nest something to anchor to. I usually use a floating plant. Sometimes the males will use that for their nest while other times they just start in the corner of the tank with nothing above them.

Neither. I'm not sure why you're looking at a cup for them. They're not cave spawners like some cichlids, but the males builds a bubblenest at the surface and places the eggs laid by the female in it.

They also should have a 5-10 gallon tank for spawning. See this website for spawning advice: http://www.bettatalk.com/

Well, it would be fine either one if you use both of them to help the bett with it's bubble nest.
