Hey,

I typically looove science. I REALLY want to be a scientist. However, my dad says it's a really hard job and I've heard some negative comments about it. So Im thinking about either majoring to be a scientist or and obg doctor. I dont care if it's hard!!

Who makes more money??

1) An OBG doctor

OR

2) A Earth Science Scientist that discovers stuff about the earth and goes to space

How much does each one make in NY per year??

Thank You.

Also, which one you think matches me if I love science??
A scientist OR an OBG doctor??

While top scientists earn very good money, I would in no way suggest to anyone that they should become scientists unless they are so passionate about it that they don't want to do anything else.

Although you hear a lot of US companies whining about the lack of scientists (and engineers) and although they demand that the government allows them access to more immigrants to fill the need, the truth is actually quite scary and not good for long term economic sense.

1. The import of foreign scientists and engineers has greatly depressed the salary growth for those currently working. Supply and demand economics would dictate otherwise, hence the solution is that there is still an oversupply.

2. Science and engineering jobs are continually being off-shored (India and China are two countries) where the cost of living (and salaries paid) are much less than in the US. This includes positions all the way through the PhD level.

3. Medical doctor jobs cannot be off-shored -- no one would be able to visit a physician, would they?

4. The idea that a scientist should work for passion and not good money is absolutely ridiculous, but many scientists are underpaid because of this concept.

5. A top-notch scientist (or engineer) doesn't just solve problems, they solve *new* problems for which solutions didn't exist before. If you don't do this often enough, say good-bye to the higher-end salary and then you have to work for much less.

6. Many scientists end up in management if they want to make more money.

7. The hours, especially in Silicon Valley, can be insane for scientists and engineers. If you want a life outside the lab or fab, be a doctor.

If you are loving science, don't talk of money.
