That's something my husband and I argue about all the time. He says they are supposed to pull the air up and out to the sides in the summer and blow the air down in the winter, since heat rises. I like it the other way because I like the air blowing down in the summer where I can feel it but I like it pulling it up and circulating it in the winter. We usually end up alternating our fans and have some going one way and some going the other way. I just put the question in the yahoo search box and here's what Bob Vila's website says, "Ceiling fans should rotate counter clock-wise in the summer (to generate a breeze downward to cool you off) and clock-wise in the winter (to cycle the warm air that rises to your ceiling.) Do not be afraid to run your ceiling fan in the winter. You can expect a 10-15% savings on your heating bill. You can save up to 40% off your cooling bill in the summer."

The blades should turn in the direction of the lowest part of the blade in the summer. Cool air stays towards the floor and needs to be circulated upwards to spread the cooling effect. The breeze caused by going the opposite direction (blowing downwards) feels better at the time because it is evaporating the moisture on your skin. It is not doing anything for the rest of the room though.

It's a fact that I don't want to believe is true, but it really is true. Ceiling fans will lower your energy costs, because your AC will not work as hard.
