I firmly believe that LGBT people are canaries in the proverbial coal mine when it comes to how much freedom is in a country or region. We see that the countries with the most freedom for everybody treat LGBT people the best. When Russia was becoming freer, "sodomy" was decriminalized, but now LGBTs are being beaten for trying to have a rally in Moscow. The Middle East is horrible for gays, and just slightly less horrible for straights. And so on, and so on.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has seen this, and has their own observations.

Did you ever think you'd live long enough to read or type the phrase "advanced nation like South Africa"? :-)

That just gave me a shiver of hopefulness.

Definitely true! Just look at the African nations that are under the thumb of theocratic or military dictatorships, or in the midst of civil war, where it means a death sentence, in comparison to advanced democracies like South Africa. Gays and lesbians are also among the first to come under attack in nations that are on the brink of civil war- including Iraq, where interestingly, Christians are also being killed and more than half have fled the country, though perhaps because of the rosy picture they're trying to paint of the situation there, there has been surprisingly little news coverage of it. Not that I was expecting anyone in the U.S. to give a crap about gays being raped and publicly executed in the streets, but Christians usually tend to assign a little more value to the lives of their brethren in other nations.

Yes, I think that's a very apt observation.

I guess that makes sense.

You can tell a lot about a nation by how their minority population is treated.
