Elaborate for me.

Their claims that dissent from American citizens equals treason

Don't like President Bush = must love terrorists

Peaceful Democratic protesters at 2004 Republican Convention removed from area by law enforcement at request of Bush's staff.

Just a few examples of what seems to me to be Republican conservatives' and the Religious Rights' opposition of free speech. I think they're all about free speech as long as they are the ones accessing it.

I believe it is the Republicans. The Republicans believe in utilizing the heavy hand of government to suppress speech with the FCC. Their fines have been very hefty and caused several people to get fired. On the other hand, most Democrats are very "PC" oriented and shun non-PC speech. The difference for me in making my determination is that the Democrats haven't tried to stifle the speech through the use of the government.

Nat Hentoff has written about how the left and right relentlessly censor each other. Anyone who is objective about the question you ask should learn more about Hentoff's article. Couldn't find the article itself, but links to comments about it are below.

I'm waiting for someone to cite the dead horse that is the Fairness Doctrine.

I wouldn't really say "Republican" per se, rather conservatives are usually behind the censorship policies on the airwaves, basically anything that they consider "immoral" or "indecent" Just look up any of those so called "TV watchdog" groups..

Now if you want to look at censorship in college, that's liberal territory right there. I had a liberal English teacher, he was alright but it seemed he was harsher on conservative students than liberal students.

That's just showing one side.

The Dixie chicks were never officially silenced. They have spoken out time and time again since their actions in London. The government hasn't arrested them, or tried them, or even gagged them. It has been their ex-fans, (Most of them loyal, proud, southern and western) folk who have stopped listening to them.

The Federal Communication Commission was set in place to keep people from uttering obscenty's during prime time and any time where children could hear it. The FCC Fines for indecency, and the seven deadly words that should never be spoken out loud.

Howard Stern hasn't been silenced, in fact, he talks all of the time, and curses. Most people don't want to listen to that stuff.

Now, for the other side of the coin.

Liberals have constantly tried to shut up Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, the Church, and even private citizens. It seems like everytime a conservative has a speech, the libs try to shout him/her down.

Then, there's the famous "Fairness doctorine" which states that if you have Rush on, you have to have a liberal speak in the next hour. From a radio station point of view, that is stupid, people tune in to listen to what they like, and stations have the right to program what they want.

Freedom of speech is the enemy of the religious right and those in government who support the religious agendas.

It is neither a left or right issue, it solely an issue for the population.

They must make sure they fight for it by shouting down anyone from either party or church that speaks or legislates against it.

That's an easy two points. Republicans spend half their time whining about a "liberal media bias". I think we thank Fox Noise for that lovely catch phrase. Any time a celebrity speaks out about the wrong path our country is on, who's the only party that complains?

Freedom of speech does not insure freedom from consequence...on Y/A Republicans get the short end of the stick...Libs and Dem's don't seem to think we should be able to express an opinion that differs from theirs.

I don't think it's party-based. I think those who oppose freedom of speech are high-strung and easily offended.
