Since my dance teacher is keeping me back a level in ballet this will be my third year in the same ballet level. All she said was that when I stand at barre i need to get my rib cage inline with my pelvis. How can I strengthen my body so it is easier for me to fix that?

i don't think your teacher is doing her job, she should be teaching you these things and how to be in the right position.
I used to be a junior member of the Birmingham Royal ballet and one thing they taught me was this: When standing in first, pretend there's a sticker where your heels meet (or nearly meet) and pretend there is a sticker on the very base of your spine. you need to tip your pelvis so that these stickers are in line. so your bottom is kinda going down and your tummy is pulling in. Don't forget to pull through you body as if someone is pulling a string on the top of your head, clench your buttocks and hold in your tummy. its hard at first but you will get stronger. good luck.

Well, there are many possible reasons for your arching, your knees could be hyperextended and when you sink back in your knees your back arches. Also it could be a lack of strength in your core (stommach, back) To help strengthen do sit ups using port a bras so you practice correct alignment while you are strengthing your core. Also, if you always stand with correct alignemnt your body will forget how you used to stand. This helped me with my hyperextention of my knees, i also asked a close friend to help remind me, if i forget. Good luck, and i know how it feels when your are held back for somthing that is hard to control.

I am not sure if this has anything to do with ballet, but I have chronic back problems, and my chiropractor has always told me the same thing: A weak back means weak abs. Once your abs are able to sustain holding your back, you will be much better aligned, so I'm sure it can't hurt!

you might want to try pilates and yoga, it really helped me with alignment. If you have the money, a feldencrais practitioner can do wonders, if not, buy some feldencrais videos and practice the excercises. The most important thing is to be aware of your body at all times

i use the "suck and tuck" trick because i have horrendous posture. think of a string coming from your belly button and someone is pulling it upward, suck in your abs, and tuck in your pelvis. that will roll them into alignment, while also "teaching" your ab muscles and back muscles where they need to be to maintain proper alignment.

always be conscious of your spine. in dancing taking control of the spine takes control of the whole body
