Personally I would keep them, because they are the closest thing we have to a surviving history, and if we loose our roots then what are we...
FLOATERS thats what!; like in the swimming pool, with no ties to our history, and a feeling of cold modern metal contemporary emptiness in our hearts.

F*** the tourism, that just a 'bonus' keep traditions going because you don't know what you got till its gone.

Yes i think we need Monarchy now more than ever because of the likes of New Labour and the threat of the EU. It is sad how many people believe republican propaganda about money and the role of Monarchy. As i said in an other answer a Republic will not make us more "democratic" or richer only give more perks to politicians. And you are right Monarchy works it links us with our past and balances power and whatever party wins all are united because of the crown .And to be honest I'm sick of the chattering classes putting down our heritage if they love the EU and socialism so much why don't they get a one way ticket to the continent ?

Yes. Without the Queen, the UK would be just another typical democracy. You can't buy a 1000 year old history, she represents everything that makes Britain a distinctive society.

The Royal Family do give us something very British - the class system which crushes every one of us! As for the tourist thing, the greatest "Royal" draw in Europe is the Palace of versailes and they haven't had a Monarch for centuries! Surely we are a grown up enough country not to need a Mummy and Daddy at the top pulling our strings who are totally undemocratic and not voted in! Elizabeth has done the job well but after her it is time to say enough!

Yes, they're quite cute really, very quaint and traditional, i say keep 'em.
It only costs us about £1.00 each per year to pay for them and this is a small price to pay, I'd gladly go to £1.25 or even £1.50 at a push. any more than that and I'd go all french on them....roll out the guillotine!

While absurd in reality, its pomp and ceremony and its legacy to the UK makes it worth keeping around....despite what we are led to believe at times they give back far more than they take.
