Where do you shop that they're so expensive? They're $20 a carton where I live, buddy and that's not very expensive at all.

If the government was truly concerned with our health like they claim they are, cigarettes would already be banned. However, the money they make from the excise tax could never be replaced so they will never ban it. I finally was able to quit smoking to the point where I only smoke when I drink (which isn't that often and almost always go hand in hand) but it took years to get there. Major struggle.
I think they should ban it, but they can't.

I don't think we will ever be able to ban them completely, but we can certainly make it much harder to get them or at least more expensive. Unfortunately, I think if we try to ban cigarettes, we will have huge uproar and people will go off on their constitutional right to choose to smoke.
We all know the effects of cigarettes and why it is so bad to smoke them, so it is now up to us as to what we want to do to our bodies, not up to the government.

Impossible to do.
The government depends of tobacco taxes (and lawsuit settlements) to fund health programs and to supply taxes to the general fund.
Tobacco farmers get governemt subsidies to produce tobacco, and would probably go bankrupt without the income and the government handout
A significant voting block consists of tobacco users and, in colation with those who protest ANY government intervention, they represent enough votes to prevent any effort to ban tobacco completely.

OK, this is not a popular question. Nonsmokers say yes, and smokers say no. The thing is, that the government does make huge amounts of money taxing cigarettes. You may say "that's good." Honestly though, look at who is paying the taxes--ADDICTS. As a smoker, I say that if the public opinion says smoking is hazardous to health then smoking should be banned. Let's stop taking advantage of addicts. Maybe the tobacco companies can start growing corn for alternative sources of fuel.

No, I don't think it should be banned once and for all. It's not an illegal substance and certainly is no worse than alcohol, which is also abused and harms others more than any second hand smoke ever would. (Drunk drivers who continue to drive while impaired).
I don't want the government to make these type of decisions for us. That is way too much "big brother" watching for me.

^ I would love to see smoking cigarettes banned forever, but for the people addicted it would be a really rough ride, there would have to be a program or a substitute in place in place to help them kick the habit, like heroin addicts have methadone.
To we people who never smoked or don't smoke anymore this may sound ridicules but if you know someone that is addicted they're not laughing.

I don't smoke, but I don't think cigarettes should be banned. Next thing you know they'll try to ban alcohol. Next thing you know you'll only find certain things on the black market. It's a slippery slope that is best left alone.

I believe it should be, but doubt if it will happen. There is too much history and background. Hundreds and thousands of people will be put out of work. Farmers, farm help, shippers, marketers, and all the industry that supports these workers.
Look what happened with prohibition of alcohol. Too much money to be made.
But you are right, it should be.

Ban it. It's disgusting, and smells horrible. Most smokers also litter there butts. Gross! If I wanted to smell like stale smoke and an ash tray, I'd light up a cancer stick myself, but I DON'T, so why should I have to be subjected to cigarette smoke?

Despite being a smoker, I believe it should be. Its the biggest killer and most addictive substance known to humanity, yet, as the answerer before me mentioned, the gov makes so much money on it, it never will be. Death makes a profit that keeping people alive doesn't. Then again, making it illegal doesn't mean people won't do it. It will become an underground issue... look at the various instances of prohibition of substances in this country. Making things illegal doesnt stop people from choosing to do something anyway.
