Short answer: Yes, Taiwan is a great place to go for good food and rest. Long answer: Taiwan's food is some of the most delicious and varied I've ever encountered. If you like variety, try the Shi Da night market (which is highlighted in the travel guide linked below), if you like traditional Taiwanese or even Taiwanized Western food, just walk along Roosevelt road in Taipei, heading North toward the city center, and you'll encounter literally hundreds of little "hole-in-the-wall" traditional restaurants as well as modern, Western restaurants with a Taiwanese flavor. As for rest, Taiwan because it still hasn't really been discovered internationally, and because they've only just started to advertise their tourist attractions, is a great place to come for a rest. There are rarely hordes of other tourists at many of the national places of interest and the prices (outside of the Hsin-yi district of Taipei), are generally quite reasonable. Good luck, and please consider using the travel guide book I've linked to below. It's the one I use when I come back to Taiwan to visit my family (without it, I would have little idea of what's new and going on outside of Taipei and Tainan).

If you want to live in Taiwan (or Japan for that matter) you CAN escape some of the bullsh*t from back home, but then encounter even more of the same here. IT IS MORE CROWDED FOR ONE THING.
But if you want to study something, like martial arts, or Chinese, then OK. If not you are foolish to come here
You will never have it as good as you'll probably have it back home. I've actually learned to enjoy, (miss) the cold of back home. The social cold, though is a different story.

Hi, you may find the link below informative. According to Scott Sommers, Canadian teachers make up the largest constituent of foreign teachers here in Taiwan. As of 2005, there were 1,897 Canadians employed as teachers, Americans at 1,783, and South Africans at 1,000 more or less.

There is quite a few of us. Dunno how many. It seems about 4 to 6 out of 10 Westerners are Canadian. The other ones are mostly South Africans.Thats probably something your government keeps tabs on somewhere, for the day y'all round us up and punt us back home...
Most of the Canadians out here are teaching, and avoiding overpriced real estate/rent while paying back loans and avoiding high gas prices by minimizing the commutes. And escaping winter. Likely the same thing as you. A few are engineers helping out the architectural firms or working with some of the electronics companies. Thats probably about it.
