I have visual studio 2005 installed on my machine but I must update an older project that was created with VS 2003. I do not want to convert the old code to VS 2005. I know that you can install 2003 first and then 2005 without problems but will doing it the other way around mess things up?

The only problem I had when doing that is: Default debugger was set to 2003. Other than that, there was no problem ( make sure to install them in separate directories )

Create a new User Account and install VS2003 there.

Use the Shared folder to move files between users, in My Network Places and My Computer.

1 make a copy of the file b4 you try anything
2 see if it will open in 2005
3 see if you can still save it in the 2003 format in the save as options
