trust me, the question is not about who was the greatest or who would be better today. The question is simple.

MJ stayed outdone.
11 rings are still 11.
not 5, not 6,
but 11. And only Bill Russell got that many.
Not MJ.

"Bill Russell re-imagined basketball, bringing an exciting new level of play to the game. His analytical defensive style consisted of more than rebounding: he blocked shots and altered the plays of his opponents. During his playing career as center for the Boston Celtics, the team won 11 NBA championships. Russell earned five MVPs, played in 12 All-Star games, and led the NBA in rebounds five times. Russell's innovative defensive strategies remain the key to championship basketball.
In 1967, when Russell began coaching the Boston Celtics, he became the first African American to coach a major professional sports team.
In 1980, the Professional Basketball Writers Association of America voted him "Greatest Player in the History of the NBA." Many fans still agree"
Now I have made the question alot bigger than I wanted it to be.

Nobody has more rings than Russell. Sam Jones is closest with 10.
(edit)
"Phil Jackson also has 10 rings."
True, but I assumed the question was referring to players, and as a player Jackson only earned one ring.

No, no one ever had more Championships than Russell. Yes, Bill Russell is one of the all-time greats. But you really can't say Russell was necessarily better than Jordan or anyone in the modern era. The game was completely different back then. There were much fewer teams, a fact that may well make Russell's championship record unbeatable, moreso than his skill as a player. That Celtic team was an amazing team, too. Russell was a big part of it, but not the only part. Take him out of the lineup, and those Celtics were STILL one of the best teams in the league at the time. So yes, Russell has more rings than anyone. What does that mean? He was the best player of his era on the greatest team of the era... and little else.

No one has ever gotten close to that. The closest one to that is Michael Jordan who has 6 championship rings. Shaq is has 4. Tim Duncan has 3, but depending on what happens in this year's NBA Finals, he could end up getting his 4th championship ring. I think Shaq will end up with 1 or 2 more rings. And Tim Duncan I will say he will get one more because even though Tony Parker is amazing, the rest of his team is aging fast. Tim Duncan, Bruce Bowen, and Manu Ginobbli are getting up to age. So this could be Duncan's last chance at a championship.

It'll be very difficult if not impossible. When Russell played, there fewer teams in the league, no salary cap, and less free agents who moved around different teams.

bill russell averaged 15 points per game on 44% shooting.
I mean Len Chappel, Tom Heinshon, Gus Johnson and Bob Pettit are considered legends from that damn era
Len Chappell 6'8'' center, Tom Heinsohn 6'7'' center, Gus Johnson 6'6'' center, Bob Pettit 6'9'' center to name a few were some of the all star centers that played in Wilt's era. Jordan beat the likes of Magic Johnson, Michael Cooper, Clyde Drexler, Larry Bird, Mitch Richmond, Rolando Blackman, and plenty of other great defenders from that era gave it up to MJ.
give me a break
MJ passed him up
it was russell's team that won the championships. and the greatest coach of all time red.
Bill Russell scoring titles = 0 (he could not score and announcers always talked about his scoring struggles)
Jordan scoring titles = 10
Wilt scoring titles = 7
Jordan scoring titles over 50% = 6
Bill Russell years over 50% = 0
Jordan steals titles = 2
Jordan def player of the year = 1
Bill Russell stl def poy = 0,0
Bill Russell is not MJ. period. MJ goat.

sidenote, in a regular season game in 1961 there was a cliffnote on a boxscore that reads "Bob Pettit stopped 7 of Bill Russell's shot attempts". damn what a freak of nature.
Bill Russell was such a freak of nature that Wilt Chamberlain averaged 52 points per game against his greatest of his era defense. imagine if shaq could lean on him, he would crumble.
iak ny is mad, he was owned 17 times on these message boards by me, the toothless trailer trash bum knows NOTHING about basketball outside of a dunk contest on a video game
