All plants need nutrients. Natuarl soil conditions and rain supply some of these. When I pot plants and vegetables, I use a pot with drainage holes in the bottom so the plants don't get "wet feet" and rot the roots. I use potting soil and add amendments for nutrition that the plants need, usually every two weeks in the beginning. Some plants need a specific moisture content so I bought a moisture meter to gage when to water. Pots should be of a specific ratio to plant size so roots don't ball up (root bound).
