I always believed it was Marc Cohn but someone thinks it was Robby Robertson so I was just wondering if you anyone out there knoew the truth?!?!?

Yes, it was Marc Cohn. It was on his 1991 debut album (Marc Cohn), and he got a Grammy Award the same year for Best New Artist.
The song was allegedly inspired by 70 year old blues and gospel singer called Muriel, whom Cohn met in an Arkansas roadhouse.
