I wanted to get a data card for my internet connection but I can't seem to find where the data card would go. Can somebody help? My friend said it should definitely have one as it is a brand new laptop.

If you have bought a PCMCIA card, there is no guarantee your brand new laptop will have one. My brand new laptop doesn't have a PCMCIA port (also called cardbus).

If this is the case, get a USB one instead!

Not all laptops have a PCMCIA or Cardbus Slot for putting in a data card, depends basically on how much you paid for it.
Most card slots are located on the side of the PC, left or right depends on the manufacturer. Some machines only have one slot, and many have two or more. Two is the most common but again depending on the type of datacard you actually get, it may only work in one of the two slots.
Some manufacturers cover the slot with a small flap, many use a dummy insert to fill up the hole. You can tell where it would be by looking for something about 2 inches / 5cm wide with a small button to the side of it. The button would usually protrude slightly. Push the putton and it should pop-out. Push it again and it will eject anything that is in the slot (such as a dummy card). Once you know the slot is empty, slide your card into the slot. Ensure you have installed any drivers according to the datacard suppliers instructions (most need the software installed first).
If you do not see anything that matches the above description on your machines, chances are it doesnt have one.
Best deal for an internet data card at the moment? Probably TMobiles Web n Walk Pro at £19.99 a month unlimited usage.
Hope this helps.

It should be on the side somewhere and look like a slot for a disk, its about 2.5" wide and about 1/4" thick. There will probably be a small button next to it that you use for ejecting the card.

If its brand new it might have wireless internet built in, most laptops have this now unless it was an extremely cheap one. before you put money into a card, double check your specs and see if you can't pick up the internet without it at a hotspot.

If it brand new, It have to have a port for it. There is only 4 possible sides on a laptop for the different ports of any make & model......... Find the one that fit or else ask whoever/ wherever u r going to buy the data card from. People might be able to answer your question if we know the brand of your laptop.... Hope I helped

Data card for your internet connection? What do you mean?

If you mean a Wi-Fi card, then it's probably already built-in if it's new. Likewise if you mean a modem.

Why not just try plugging it in and connecting. It may just work.

If you mean a WiFi card, it should be built-in. Read the User Manual.

To access the web, you will need to buy a wireless router. Zellers Canada has a DLink router on sale for $30 CAD this week.

the slot will be about 5cm long and about 0.5 cm high. It is usually on the side and may have a blanking card in it. Usually, there will be a button on one side of the slot which you push in to make it pop out. If you then push it in it will push out the card. Hope this makes sense :~)

Look for slots on the sides that are ~1.5 inches wide and ~.25 inches tall. They will probably have a small black ejector button adjacent to them that pokes out when you want to eject the card.

What brand is it, what model? Does it have removable/swappable drive bays?

The data card should already be installed in your computer.
