how does music contribute to american culture?

i am in class right now and i cant find out how music contributes to american culture maybe u can help.

I can't think of any current contributions it has made.......but in the 60s, it helped add fuel to the fire of the movement era. Songs like Dylan's These Times They Are A-Changin' and Blowin' in the Wind and Buffalo Springfield's For What Its Worth became anthems for struggle and voices of change. Songs such as The Who's My Generation relfected the unrest of the youth and its distrust in "The Man" and anyone over 30.

Today, we see a little of that, but not much. Socially conscious music seems to have taken a back seat. Yes, there are charity songs that support a cause and brings its plight to the forefront ( i.e. Green Day's remake of Working Class Hero, the remake of Marvin Gaye's What's Going On.....), but that's about it.

Many people say jazz was the first truely American art form.

Music is a big part of any culture. The blues, jazz, soul, bluegrass, even rock and pop music are part of American culture. Imagine what the 50's would have been like without rock n' roll. Music both reflects and influences the time in which it was made.

Well, it can reflect what is happening socially. Such as "A Hard Rain Is Gonna Fall" or "What's Going On." And it can also help people individually. Most of the songs in the 50's had to do with teen-age love and heartbreak. If you heard those songs, you felt a bit better because someone else was going through the same thing you were. I dont think music now adays has anything to do with it. Maybe in the 60's but now no. Unless having sex w/ everyone or shooting is what you mean.
