I just met my new neighbors, who are from up north....After I hear them talk, I don't even want to open my mouth for fear that they will think I'm dumb/ignorant (like the stereotype goes). What should I do?

I'm from 'up north' and I don't think someone is dumb because they have a Southern accent. Don't let fear keep you from opening up and meeting new people.

Why do you care what strangers think of you? If they are stupid enough to judge you by something as superficial as your accent, then you have to ask yourself how valid is the opinion of a stupid person anyway?

Besides, it is probably all just in your head anyway. I doubt that they think this way. Quit worrying about it.

Actually, I used to have a southern accent, and when I moved up North, the only stereotype that I faced is that everyone assumed that I was racist, and/or from the KKK or something.

Speaking as a Southern girl myself, I think Southern accents can be very charming. Just act intelligent and respectable and if they judge you simply because of your accent, they are the ones who are ignorant and you shouldn't care what they think. Just be yourself and don't worry. It'll be fine. If they have a problem with Southerners, they probably wouldn't have moved to the South anyway.

this is going to be one in each of those huge thumbs down answer... yet i'm from NJ or perhaps although i like usa music, I nevertheless think of in many cases a heavy southern accessory makes even the main clever guy or woman sound form of dumb. besides the fact that, I used to flow into an southern accessory each time i became into making relaxing of a few thing stupid after which I met this quite superb guy from the south and that i saved doing it without thinking & I wound up quite insulting him!! I even have because stopped doing that.... *blush*

these yanks moved into your neighborhood so let them be the ones to adapt.as for sounding dumb like the stereotype, it was yanks and liberal movie makers that created that stereotype not all southerners are ignorant or dumb nor are are all yanks smart
you just keep talking and keep it real.personnaly i would rather listen to the sweet sound of a southern bred southern raised slow drawl than the nasaly 100mph chatter of a yank

Im also a northerner, born and raised NE Pennsylvania, and to me a southern accent is hot....I love to hear girls talking with a Southern drawl, seriously..it knocks me dead....

Hey, listen to a 'Yank' say 'OPTION"...."WATER"....we still have an accent, yet nothing beats a Southern girls talk.

Speak. Don't allow other peoples ignorance to dictate your life. Most likely your neighbors with enjoy your accent, but if they do judge you based on that then it's they who are ignorant.

if they think you are dumb/ignorant because of your accent, then they are the ones who are dumb and ignorant! Just be yourself.

Just be yourself and say something intelligent...they will figure out your intelligence by the content, not by the accent.
