Everytime I watch the news about Paris being in jail there is always some "legal expert" being interviewed about the case. The "legal experts" always say that the punishment was way too harsh considering the crime wasn't so bad. They keep saying that she shouldn't have had to serve ANY jail time.
These "legal experts" say that other people that are guilty of the same crime usually only have to do community service. They also keep saying that the only reason she got such a harsh punishment is because she is a celebrity.
I tend to think that celebrities get away with murder (literally) and that it's about time one of them got more then a slap on the wrist. I don't think her punishment is too harsh (it seems fitting if you ask me).
Anyway, I just wanted to know if the "legal experts" are right and her punishment is too harsh.

Since asking this question I discovered that Paris is out of jail. Seriously, WTF!?! I tend to think that she will be out drinking and driving tonight.

I just heard another attorney say precisely the same thing that people with this type of offenses don't get sentence to jail time because the jails are too crowded and instead do community service.
With that in mind, I wonder how many Paris Hilton's are out on the roads right now driving. IT'S SCARY.
I stay home on holidays when the danger is worse. I avoid the freeways most of the time as there are way too many people driving under the influence EVERY day.
I think driving under the influence is a serious problem and the law needs to take this serious and not only when it comes to Paris Hilton.
The Judge and the Sherriff may be using Paris Hilton's fame to get some recognition for themselves too. I heard the Judge got a standing ovation at his church. Probably a bunch of hipocrit church goers who also drive under the influence.
I wonder how many people reading this are drug and alcohol abusers themselves. How many people reading this have also been caught driving under the influence and only did community service.
How many child molesters and other serious crimminals are out free because there isn't enough room in the jails.
We need more jails so all drunk drivers get jail time and not just Paris Hilton.
It's just like the media to be biased and make it sound like celebrities want special treatment. Are they mind readers? Paris did not ask to be let out early. The Sherriff made that decision on his own.
Paris Hilton didn't ask to be famous. People made her famous.

Paris Hilton was not whinning. She was not eating or sleeping. You call that whinning? Let me know how anyone can control their hunger pangs and their sleepiness. She was not involved in deciding to be let out. She has had her own perosnal psychicatrist due to a history of mental problems. Clausterphobia & ADD being two of them. You call mental problems whinning?
She is probably no different from other people who suffer as a result of being encarcerated
Many people including government employees have made money of her being in jail. Keeping her in jail is more beneficial to government employees' paychecks.
Haven't heard anyone complain that they should have left her at home where it is more economical for the government? That's because government employees would rather make money off her.
Some people get used to being in jail that they don't mind it and keep going back repeatedly. Some prefer being in jail.

There are many aspects of the case that go outside the actual offenses that I am sure were taken into consideration - namely that she failed to register for the court mandated alcohol classes and she showed up for her hearing 20 minutes late.
If you add that to the drunk driving charge (remember she HIT someone - didn't do them major damage thank heaven!), she was caught driving while suspended, and then caught driving suspended AGAIN.....so let's see failing to register for the classes and two driving whil suspended - so that is three probation violations in less than 3 months time. Then add that she didn't bother to show up for her own hearing on time.
Face it folks - you or I (us normal folks) wouldn't have walked out of that courtroom that day. We would have been immediately serving time.
Princessa Hilton thinks being dumb and rich excuse her actions - but let me ask this to all those "experts"": How 'harsh' would this sentence be if they had let her off with a slap on the wrist and the next time she went out and broad sided a mini-van with a family in it?
If you drink and drive there is no punishment "too harsh" in my opinion! You get on that road and you are risking the lives of every other person out there - to me that equates to a mass attempted murder. There are no drunk driving accidents - drinking and driving are intentional acts, and premeditated as well (you know you are drinkin and you know you are driving) so therefore you deserve the worst.

I don't care if her punishment was too harsh. She was caught drinking and driving AND driving without a license. She should understand her money isn't going to buy her way out of everything, and if she breaks the law she faces the same legal system the rest of us do.
I applaud the prosecutors and the judge. Jail isn't supposed to be easy, and when she is done, she can go back to jetting around the world and pretending to be a celebrity, which is a hell of a lot more than 99.9999% of the prison population can say.

The judges had been very lenient with her in the past when she was charged with wreckless driving and was simply sentenced to 36 months probation, alcohol education classes, and a $1,500 fine.
However, while still on probation, she was caught driving drunk, with a blood alcohol which is a very serious crime.
Just think of all the people she could have harmed while she drove under the influence of booze.
She didn't learn her lesson the first time around so perhaps, by this judge being tough on her, she will certainly learn her lesson, this time, before she kills someone with her drunk driving habit.
No, this punishment was not too harsh.

When is bipolar or nearly that and claustrophobia a reason to get out of jail. Most of time if you give them trouble they put you in straight jacket and you lay there. I feel no pity, I have too many friends in jail who suffer as much as she if not more.

OF COURSE NOT! Everyone who is convicted of DUI has a minimum of 10 days in jail. She's just a whiny little baby who thinks that because she's rich she shouldn't be punished like everyone else.

I think the judge really wanted to impress on Paris that there ARE consequences for her actions. So yes he had to be a little harsher on her than he probably would have been to someone else. I really hope she learns her lesson and becomes a better person...

Ahh .. anything for publicity and every man and his dog has pushed this for everything they can get out of it. Paris got off lightly, really and not without sufficient warning. Should be more of it.

it wasn't too harsh. people keep forgetting that the crime that started all this was drunk driving. she technically only spends 20 some days for driving while drunk, then drving again after she was told not to.
