First, shut off the notebook, the router, and the modem and leave all off for at least 0.5 minutes. Make sure all the connecting cables are properly plugged in.

Run a straight CAT5 cable from the router LAN port to a pc. Make sure the pc LAN port is set to obtain ip address automatically.

Turn on the modem.

After at least 1 minute turn on the router. You should see the modem's power light light and the WAN light should flicker a little. If the power light or WAN light never flickers the modem may be bad and you need to contact your ISP.

After 2 minutes, turn on the pc that has a wired connection to the router. Give the pc time to warm up (assume 2 minutes minimal).

Open command prompt on the pc (Start - run, type in cmd and hit enter). Type "ipconfig" without the quotes and then hit enter. You should see a LAN IP address assigned to the wired connector; you may also see one assigned to the wireless connector. Note these addresses. Most likely they will be in the form 192.168.x.y where x is most likely 0 or 1 (but can be any number up to 254) and where y is any number from 2 - 255.

If you do not have any LAN IP addresses showing, the router's LAN DHCP is down and this needs to be fixed; the router may be burned out as well.

If you have LAN IP address for wired but not wireless connection, the router config for the wireless needs to be reconfigured and saved.

If you have LAN IP addresses for both wired and wireless the router's LAN side is ok.

Once you have LAN IP addresses, check WAN connection. In command prompt, type in "ping 4.2.2.2" without quotes and hit enter. You should see 4 ping responses. If you do not, check the WAN config in your router. If it is set for a dynamic IP (which I assume you have) then this is properly configured. You most likely have a modem failure - contact the ISP on this. The ISP will test from their end as well to confirm an issue.

If none of this works, write again telling us what you did and we can proceed further.

Keep in mind that whenever you change a router config it must be saved or the change will be lost with a power outage. Whenever doing config changes, firmware upgrades, or other router service, it is best to use a wired connection.

Wait until the power comes back on so your router will work again, not to mention the other network gear you use.
