Some people just have low self worth and winning at all costs (including cheating) seems to make them feel superior for just a little while. Honestly, a hug would do more good.

It is the same as cheating in online chess or checkers. Success can be like an addictive drug. People want more self-validation to the point they forget what they are trying to prove. People root for athletes they would otherwise be ashamed to know. Having a competitive nature should be a good thing but some folks don't know when to turn it off.
