23.33 seconds.

Here's why...

It takes 7 seconds to strike 4 times. There are three spaces of "quiet" in between 4 strikes. Therefore, it takes 7/3 seconds between each strike. Now, when it strikes 11, there are 10 "quiet" spaces, so the total time to strike 11 is 10 x 7/3 = 23 1/3 seconds. This is really easy if you draw a time line.

Hint:

1 stroke takes 7/4

So 11 strikes will take 7/4 x 11 = 19.25, but the process is not linear, I think it is logarithmic. So look up the formula in your physics book where the Q? is found.

You have to understand the clock mechanism also. Most of the time it is 1 or two swings of the pendulum per stroke of a bell.

But "John F" has figured this out for you, it is linear and the answer is 23.33 base on the mechanism.

Here is how you solve it. At Four o'clock it will strike 4 times. If it takes 7 seconds to strike 4 times, that means it will take 1.75 seconds for every strike on the pendulum.

Where did I get 1.75 from?

I divided the amount of time it took by how many times it struck. So it would be 7 divided by 4 (7/4) which equals 1.75. Now that we know it takes 1.75 seconds to strike each time, we can than calculate how long it will take to strike 11 times.

11 times 1.75 (11X1.75) equals 19.25 seconds. Because each strike takes 1.75 seconds and it strikes 11 times so the equasion will be (11X1.75).

Understand?

I have no clue where you got 23.33 but it is incorrect.

ANSWER = 19.25 seconds.

The proportions are assumed to be the same so:

7/4 = x/11, ...solving for x:

x = 7/4 * 11 = 19.25

Don't know where 23.33 seconds came from. Given the decimal that equals 1/3, this would imply division by 3 which is not possible given the problem statement. The answer you gave is wrong.
