I don't think there is any reason to get a cell phone at the age of 10, 11, or 12. I believe you should get your first cell phone when you start driving. There is no reason to get one any earlier. And the only reason I think you need one at 16 is just in case your car breaks down, and to let your parents know when you arrive at whatever destination you're at. Children that have cell phones in elementary...thats f u c k i n spoiled!

Cell phone for personal use? 16 or 17, when you can pay for the monthly cost (calls, text messages, etc) with your part-time job.

Cell phone for emergency use? As soon as you are old enough (mature enough) to be out of your parent's sight and on your own. This is probably around 11 years old, but will vary.

i think the only phone a 10 11 or 12 year ols should have is a phone that calls emergency contacts and 911...there is no need for a CHILD to be running around with a cell phone at that age...its rediculous!!

It depends on circumstances like when he goes to school he should not be given cell phone.Because there always is a landline on the school. He should not be given expensive ones.I think a boy or girl of 10 to 12 can't be guessed having a mobile by the bandits,it is ok for them to have a mobile at last.

No. It's not necessary. A prepaid phone when driving is fine, but it's not needed before then. If they're at a friends house, or need to stay late after school, they can use the school or friend's home phone.

I think the kids should have phones as soon as they are allowed to be by themselves outside the house - definitely by the school age. The phones should be GPS enabled and allow parents to check where the kids are ALL THE TIME.. This kind of service is offered by Verizon and Sprint, and probably other companies as well.
It is responisibility of a parent to teach the kids to use the phone responsibly.

My daughter got her first phone this past Christmas when she was 11, she's now 12. I make her earn her minutes by doing chores and such. She is learning responsibility, by not using her minutes up before she gets more. Sometimes she runs it out and then has no minutes and has to wait until she earns more.

i think kids should be at least 12-14 before they can handle having their own cell phone. even then, parents should closely monitor the cell phone activity and prohibit anything like texting and sometimes using the internet on the cell phone since that can be costly.

My son got his when he entered middle school.
I believe he was 11?
Never lost it, or goes over his minutes.
Trying to convince your parents? lol

He uses it only for emergencies and to call us to let us know where he is or what time he will be home.

****Also his phone has a GPS system that if God forbid anything should happen to him, police can track him by satellite.
