Hammer, screwdriver set that includes flat blades as well as Phillip head drivers, 12 and 50 foot tape measure, line level (will help you put up pictures so they're level), regular level, power drill with a 1/2 inch chuck (a little more expensive but when you need it it'll be there), a set of good drills from 1/16 through 1/4 inch, a hole saw, wood borers from 1/8th inch through 1/2 inch, a jig saw, a circular saw, a black and Decker foldable work bench, a good step ladder, a 6 ft step ladder, a 20 ft extendable ladder (have to clean those gutters), electrical tape, Teflon tape (for pipe joints or propane tank hook ups), pliers, a set of crescent wrenches, a good ratchet set, nail punches, a couple of vice grips, some C clamps of various sizes, a couple of pipe wrenches of various sizes, wire cutters, a wire stripper, a collection of Molly's (wall fasteners) and other fasteners, an industrial staple gun with a mix of staples, a glue gun, a caulking gun, and a big tool box, a work bench with storage, a collection of nails of different types (finishing, flat head, galvanized and plain up through 10p). Also, get a few paint brushes including some disposable ones, a roller and a paint pan, some Gorilla Glue, some Elmer's Glue and small tubes or epoxy glue. Your tool kit will grow over time as you add tools for different purposes. I might suggest getting a tool bucket instead of a box. They have a skirt that hangs over the rim of a 5 gallon bucket and will organize all your tools, plus it should have a holster for your cordless drill. Plus you can use the interior of the bucket for larger items. It's easy to carry and everything is visible.
Certainly you need:
SAFETY GLASSES!
dust mask and ear protection
leather work gloves
hammer
cordless drill (at least 12 volt)
drill bits and flathead and phillips bits
Regular and small flathead and phillips screwdrivers
needlenose pliers
channel lock pliers
vice grips
Craftsman Robo-grip pliers
90 degree square and adjustable square
level
pencils (and pencil sharpener) and Sharpie markers
Duct tape and painter's tape
stud finder
1 inch flexible putty knife
2 good paintbrushes
paint roller and pan
caulk gun
25 foot extension cord
25 foot tape measure
wood chisels
wire cutters
hand clamps (lots of types available. Get at least one large adjustable screw clamp)
Some good power tools to start with:
jig saw
circular saw
palm sander
belt sander
electric brad nailer
I went for years without a ratchet set and got by OK. Once I bought one, it was amazing how often I use it. If you have it in your budget, get one.
I'm sure I forgot to list at least one item but this should get you started.

The only item you need in your tool box is the phone numbers of a couple of handy people who know how to use the tools. They will likely already have their own tools.
Spend the money on fixing them dinner or drinks to show your appreciation whenever they come over to fix it for you.
Tools can be harmful to your health, especially if you do not know how to use them properly. They appear to be harmless, but many serious injuries can occur.
Those that already own and use tools regularly, usually derive great pleasure using them. They get a feeling of accomplishment, and you can add to that by showing appreciation.

Basic essentials--- Hammer, tape measure. 1 philips/1 flathead screw driver--- Although, I do like my cordless drill w/ screwdriver bits... Picture hanging hooks, wire, Duct Tape, Electrical tape, Flashlight w/ batteries, Wrench-possibly and all in 1 ratchet style.. I think Craftsman makes one... A nice sturdy room to grow tool box... I like to have scissors in my tool box... I also keep spackling (to fill in hole, a small container) w/ a spackle knife. I think that's about it...Or atleast all I can think of ..

Mine has a hammer, nails, DeWalt cordless screwdriver and screws of various types and lengths, level, tape measure, pliers and exacto knife. I never need more than that for normal household duties. ;)
