Didn't say where you live but it's most likely Moles. You can get a "bomb" that you stick in the holes that spreads gas though the tunnels to eradicate them. Keep the dog in while you do it. They're tough to get rid of and you may need an exterminator. If you're in the West it could be ground hogs. Go to a local nursery and ask them what's best to use.

It might be chipmunks but I had holes like that and it was a skunk and his relatives eating grubs in the lawn.
Unfortunately, I had a dog at the time who just never learned to stay away from the skunks. After an entire summer of weekly skunk sprayings, I had the lawn treated . I kept the dog inside and walked him away from the lawn for a few days. Once the grubs were gone, I had no more problems.

Skunks and moles leave obvious tell-tale signs. Skunks turn over your lawn at night looking for grubs and leave it quite a mess. Moles form rounded trails of their underground paths throughout the yard that collapse when stepped on. Your problem is definately chipmunks. First I'd like to say that there's nothing wrong with sharing your lawn with chipmunks, they're really harmless, but if you must get rid of them here are a few idea's: There must be a good food source for them nearby, fruit tree's, bushes, nut, acorns, eliminate as much of it as you can. The same goes for a water source. Fill the holes with rocks and soil. They will get discouraged and move on over to the neighbors where they may just be welcome. I have a few in my yard, I love them, they feast on mulberries, pine nuts, acorns, and butternuts. They are always welcome here, to bad you couldn't forward them to me.

I'm in Tennessee and it sounds like moles to me. My brother just bought a house and his yard was a mess. Buy Juicy Fruit chewing gum and put down the holes. We found this on the internet and so far it has worked. Or maybe get some cats!!Good luck.

Chuck up some flags, cordon off areas with rope and sell admission tickets for your new Putt-Putt course...

Squirrels dig up my yard looking for the acorns they spent all last fall burying.
If it is squirrels or chipmonks, I would think that your dog would be a good deterrent.
