The Eastern way is stereotypically rigid. Generally speaking, it means suffocating social conformation. The Western kind gives greater room for individual growth and self expression.
I don't think either one is more materialism oriented. Its a matter of social norms and personal values, not regional in nature.
Over liberalism has its problems too.
I believe in the virtues of each kind and I think it would be nice to strike a balance between the two.

My travels to the east having been limited to just three countries, would indicate that the western lifestyle is more simple. When a county offers as much freedom for speech, travel, and betterment of the individual, it becomes more desireable. Also living conditions are so crowded that the infrastructure in most eastern cities can't handle the population. Poverty seems more prevalent in Eastern cities, and Western television and movies make the west look good.

People from the East are attracted to Western Culture which enables a more comfortable lifestyle namely - Democracy, good education, modern clothes, cars, mobile phones, internet, fast food, taking control of ones life etc.,
People from the West are attracted to the East becuase the Eastern Ideology is too lead a simple life and find the inner happiness regardless of how much or how less technology you can have or afford.
Now and more so in the coming decades, it is much the same life style everywhere - East and West are not that much different now.
It is the have's and have not who are really different.

It works for both, you see. It's a basic nature of human beings, that we are always curious of what is on the other side of the fence, to the point of voyeurism.
To answer your question though, the Eastern people are attracted to their lifestyle, simply put because it is what they see. The western culture is always seen through media that's why it's easier to adapt.
Although, another reason could be that since the western culture is so different from ours, we become curious of it. There are aspects of their lifestyle that appeal to us and example of this would be freedom.
I would prefer the Eastern way of living, with its clean, mystifying and serene lifestyle, although I would miss the part of drinking coffee under umbrellas outside. :) Well, it's just basically a fusion of both.

Western civilization is more advanced in many ways. Starting with the Renaissance, art, literature, architecture, politics, science - it just exploded into new forms and better living standards, not to mention better ways of thinking, behaving and the way people treat each other. Today, even though there is much stress with the advent of technology in the west, the stress in the east leads to poverty, hunger, disease and death, not to mention wild revolutions and genocide.
