2 designates the shade of the graphite in the pencil. The shade gets lighter as the numbers get higher. #1 is too dark to easily erase, so is bad for taking tests with. #3 is too light for reading words written with it, in general. That's why #2 became the standard.

Speaking of pencils, I heard this little tidbit on the radio this morning. 75% of all pencils are yellow. Back in the late 1800's, most pencils were imported from China, who produced superior amounts of lead (gee..go figure!). Anyways, the real humdinger of the story was the reasoning behind the color yellow. The Chinese connect the color yellow to royalty, and...power. So all pencils were painted yellow and labeled "China"..to impress countries of the world.

The number on a pencil relates to the ratio of hardness of the lead, and darkness of the color. #1 pencils are softer and darker, but #2 pencils have become the most standard because of the ease of use. The #2 just means that it is the second darkest color of lead.

Where is # 1 and why don't you hear anything about it? Since you don't hear from # 1 shouldn't that make # 2 the new # 1?
