from Windows Explorer, do a search on your entire disk for any files called :
*.tmp
This will display all of your temporary files.
Now, delete them all and then open your recycle bin and delete them from there.

You can just use the "Disk Cleanup". It is under Accessories, System Tools. It will clean all types of temporary files including internet files.
Defrag really does not need to be run that often in most cases. Once a month, Once a Quarter, it depends on how many programs get added deleted etc.
I generally run mine about once a month and find it saying drive does not need to be defragged quite often.

Disk defrag...
Unless you do a lot of installing and/or removing programs from your computer it's not necessary to do a defrag very often...but...if you want to find out if you do need to defrag...let windows tell you...do the following:
click the start button...then programs...then accessories...then system tools...then disk defragmenter. When the next screen comes up it will have a window listing drives that are available for defragging. click on the drive you want to check and then click on the "analyze" button at the bottom of the pane. When it's done it'll advise you whether or not it need defragging.
Cleaning up Temp files
Do all of the above...EXCEPT when you get to the system tools click on the disk cleanup entry on the menu and it'll do a fair job of clean up. You can also take care of your internet stuff by going to the "tools"...then internet options button at the toop of your IE explorer and clicking the clean up buttons on the explorer. This will get rid of internet temp files...browsing history and etc.
hope this helps

Disk defrag and Clean disk are in the accessories > system tools menu. Use clean disk first, then do below, then disk defrag.
Previous answer:
Open up Internet Explorer and go to Tools > Internet Options > General tab. Then click the Clear History button, and clear history. Click the delete cookie button and delete all cookies. Click the delete files button and clear all files, be sure and check the box that says "clear all offline content".
Next, right click My Computer (assuming you are running XP but ok for 2000) and click on Properties. Select the Advanced tab. Under Performance click the Settings button. In the Performance Options select the Advanced tab. Under the Virtual Memory heading click the Change button.
In the Virtual Memory Window click Custom settings and in the top box (Initial Size) type in 1536 and in the second box (Maximum size) type in 3000. Then click Set., OK and get out of this series of boxes.
This will raise your Virtual Memory significantly(referred to as paging or swap file). Removing the machine from it's power source for a couple of minutes will flush hardware caches.
If this is a desktop, turn it off. Unplug it from power for about a minute, plug it back in, turn back on. If it is a laptop, unplug power, take battery out for about a minute, replace battery, resume normal use. This step is a hardware reboot and will eliminate any latent data floating around inside the hardware caches.

Hi Go in the accessories / system tools and select Disk Cleanup. That will allow you to delete all temporary files including the browser and internet temporary files. You should gain more speed once this is done.

is handy for doing such things, and best of all its free/no spyware.. you can set it so it does a clean everytime you start windows. the first time you run it , will take a while after that not long at all..
as for defrag, do "analyse" about once a month. if it says the drive needs defragmenting then do it =)
