I think that's an interesting quote and partially true. Either way, you have to make sacrifices. If you choose the 'life of happiness' option as outlined then you'll never settle down and never be able to share your life with someone. I don't believe that life of meaning means that you are trapped by your past. That's a very defeatist attitude. It not taking responsibility for yourself or your actions. Like throwing up your hands and saying "I can't do such-and-such because my daddy didn't hug me enough when I was a kid...oh well." Not a very productive lifestyle to say the least.

Yes - why not?
Each of us have our own goals in life that ultimately are what we believe will make us happy. For some this is wealth, for others fame, and others religion, etc.
Not sure I'd agree that happiness is uniquely human as per one of your answers though. How do we know that? Dolphins always look a pretty cheerful bunch to me.

I think most people want happiness, success, health and love...right? Yes, they may be goals - but I don't think thats the meaning of life. Also, if you look at success, health and love - they all link to happiness. So, yes your right - happiness is the ultimate goal.
In my opinion: The meaning of life is simply survival. Were supposed to live and die, and experience every emotion. happiness, love, sorrow, pain and hurt, regret, despair etc...Everybody has something different inside them that makes them unique from everybody else. We should exploit that in a positive way where we can bring happiness to ourselves and the people around us.

In a way yes it is. I personally think the meaning of life is to LIVE and to LIVE FREE. Everyday you can be happy even if you're in one of the worst situations there are little things that make you happy and people that make you happy. However i think if you're only happy ALL the time you're not really LIVING you're not experiencing the other sides of LIFE.

It depends who you ask, but I believe that happiness, sustained happiness would kill us off as a species. We strive to survive, not for happiness. It's a nice idea, but I just don't see any person achieving true happiness. It's in our nature to be dissatisfied with our lot:
Example 1 - a man is starving. He wants food, but other discomforts seem trivial to him. He perseveres because he believes he has hope.
Example 2 - a man is very wealthy. He cannot reconcile his son's homosexuality. He takes his son's life and that of himself as he despairs at the state of his existence.
To Scholar :- Lucifer means lightbringer. He was the dawnstar after all. Perhaps you should change your screen name too huh?

Life's ultimate purpose is survival of the species.
Happiness is uniquely human, and humans can be about as happy as they make up their minds to be... (with thanks to Abe Lincoln)

happy ness is not an end it is a means
you were happy as a child
full of inocent bliss [tell me why your not happy all the time]
lifes purpose is to learn that life is our freechoice
[to know to be happy or sad
be fullfilled or chose to remain unfullfilled]
to try to remain happy [despite proof of its temorary state]
the ultimate state of humans is to see that greater than self is of love and life
the ever living loving now
[given freely of the light sustaining life to live]
is of perfect grace and love beyond self love
love of other ,via love beyond self

I think so, whats the point of living if you're unhappy? All other factors contribute towards it (i.e. enough money, friends, family etc.) Even if you have all those things you could still be unhappy. It's all your frame of mind.
