Cuba had a bit of a tricky relationship with America, who did not like people revolting on their doorstep. The bay of pigs really did a lot of damage to US Cuban relations and Cuba was forced to join the Communist Camp. (You reall have to love US foreign politics).

Cuba wanted to protect itself and so, rather than the usual arms goodies, Russia wanted to put nukes into Cuba in retaliation for US nukes in Europe. It would also be the political equivilant of having a cocked gun to the US head when at the negotiating table.

Korea was slightly different. The UN was trying to re-impose the boarders along the 38th parrallel. It also wanted to stop the agressive incursions by the communist north. The bulk of the UN manpower was provided by the US, as was the CinC. Unfortunately, in order to stop the spread of world communism, the US commander continued the campaign over the 38th parrallel. This put a western power on Chinas doorstep. This made the Chinese as nervouse as the US became with Cuba and so they sent Chinees regulars into kick out the west. However, this situation would not have developed in the first place if:

a. The Soviet Union had not supplied North Korea with enough arms and training to fascilitate the initial invasion.

b. The west had given the South sufficient arms to defend itself.

c. The UN hadn't cut the country in half in the first place.

Luck

I would encourage you to discuss the means by which many Third World leaders used the Cold War to solidify their power, both at home and regionally. Google "cynical disengagement" to learn about US foreign policy in most of Africa during the time in question.
