With many electronic machines, there is no paper record, and a real recount literally can't take place.

It looks like all states may be going to paper ballot soon. The federal legislation (the Holt Bill - H.R. 811) has moved out of committee in the U.S. House and the legislative process is on going. Congress will likely pass this bill which will require a voter verified paper audit trail (VVPAT) and making DRE (direct record electronic) machines obsolete. If this passes it will probably become effective in 2010.

Paper Please~Then recycle it~~Last time I voted was a pain in the a**! The machines were malfunctioning and we stood in line forever! I would like to think that my vote really counted. Usually by the time we get home the elections have been called. I do not believe that "key" states should decide on nation wide decisions. I think many people don't vote because they know the system is screwed up. I also think that the voting system would have better value if our government wasn't the one to decide on recounts, let people be turned away, and being in total control of the election process~it is Americas vote~every one should have a chance to be heard~and counted.
I some how hope that the system will gain more creditability~then I believe you would get many more people to the polls~we must be accountable for the real opinion.
I don't give up...yet I get really frustrated~!~

Computerized voting has proven to be a terrible idea. Ignore the technophiles who accept anything so long as it involves new technology. Election fraud is very real and it has taken place all across the country. What happens is that the electronic ballots are uploaded to a central processing center and that's where the figures get changed. In one such instance I know about, the vote-thieves were caught doing this red-handed. Human beings are prone to corruption by nature and the good old paper trail is the only thing standing between you and the government you never voted for.

Yes I think it should go back to paper ballots..I mean its common sense because when something goes wrong on a machine its not always easy to get it back, actualy more than not, its difficult, but with paper its physical, if you mess up you start over.

No. Technology will always prevail over manual labor. Machines can and do make paper records. We just have to get election officials to use them.

...how about we take it one step further, and implement a vote-by-mail system like that of Oregon? Although on its face I'm not antagonistic of electronic voting machines per se, the long lines at polling stations is enough to skew elections by turning away those who cannot afford to wait as much as 6 hours in line to cast a single vote.
