should we get one through our power company and have them add it on our monthly bill, or should we go to a rent to own place?

Certainly the power company. For one thing you're already a customer and they can do an analysis, and offer you the better "STAR" rated unit for your needs. They will also offer suggestions of increasing efficiency by way of insulation, cauling windows, etc....AND may even offer CREDITS toward reducing your energy use.

Obviously a Power company is not a NON profit organization, but they have to PAY someone for the sources they use to create YOUR power, and anything they can do to save, You can be afforded as well.

If I only had the two choices it would be the power company hands down as you will get better service if the unit breaks down, the rent to own uses sub contractors or will have you bring the unit back for service. Good luck

Never never never use rent-to-own. They are charging you a fortune! I recommend going to Target, if you can afford it. Otherwise, go through the power company.
